The Ledger of the Sun: An encounter hosted by Jamie Allen for the 2022 Oslo Architecture Trienniale

“When the sun returns, I will resume my life” — George Carlin

“The Sun, with all those planets revolving around it and dependent on it, can still ripen a bunch of grapes as if it had nothing else in the universe to do.” — Galileo Galilei

“There is nothing new under the sun, but there are new suns.” — Octavia Butler

“Mother, give me the sun.”— Henrik Ibsen

As part of the Oslo Architecture Triennale (Oslo, September 2022), Artsformation commissions a workshop and appreciative, creative inquiry into food, cosmic accountability, existential economics and culinary cosmopolitics by artist-researcher Jamie Allen, in collaboration. The event, corresponding to a need for new understandings, experiences and imaginaries of natures, technologies and infrastructures of energy, includes discussions, ceremonies and meals addressing communities of solarity, sustenance, substance.

The Ledger of the Sun is a half-day gathering of discussion, ceremony, meals, and media. The encounter collectively develops understandings about the energetics, metabolisms and solar bases of life on earth, also as these relate to local and global exchanges and economies, currencies and ledgers, tokenization and blockchain. The Ledger of the Sun is an invitational encounter and solar ceremony, accompanied by a short film and a divinatory publication (Empyreal Ephemeride). These elements orient toward our inherent connectedness, or indebtedness to Earth’s stellar neighbor, enabling communities of solarity and solidarity.

The afternoon and evening programme provokes and engages through discussions, instrumentation, accounting and food, with an afternoon lunch and discussion, a solar traceability ceremony, an evening meal, and screenings and presentations of related media. The public event investigates how individuals, neighborhoods, and larger distributed communities can imagine and implement ways of aligning their exchanges and infrastructures toward futures of metabolic hope and metabolic integrity. The Ledger of the Sun includes collaborative contributions by artists, architects, scientists and researchers, including Jan Nikolai Nelles, Carola Uehlken, Dani Admiss, Gary Zhexi Zhang, Mari Sanden, Thomas Turnbull and a few other friends, new and old.
